In the EYFS and Key Stage 1 we follow a synthetic phonics programme using Read Write Inc. Read Write Inc is a programme devised by Ruth Miskin, a leading educationalist in this field. It is an inclusive literacy programme for all children learning to read and write from Nursery to Year 4. It is also suitable for older children new to English or those with any barriers with learning to read or write as it takes children from the first stages of reading to the point where they can read confidently and fluently. As part of Read Write Inc we focus on the Five P's - Praise, Participation, Purpose, Passion and Pace. We use these principles in all lessons as the are the foundation of effective teaching and learning.
By the time most pupils leave Year 2 they should be accurate, fluent, confident and expressive readers who are able to use a range of comprehension skills to gain the meaning, themes and topics within a broad spectrum of texts. In every year group we use a combination of reading schemes these include Oxford Reading Tree, Floppy's Phonics, Story World and Collins Big Cat.

In Key Stage 2 we aim to grow children's knowledge and enjoyment of a variety of genres and authors by expanding and developing their comprehension skills.
All children in school have regular access to our libraries where they can borrow a story book or an information text of their choice to take home to share with their family or read to themselves.
